Artist Statement
My art most often focuses on color, contrast and connections to nature. Textures often mimic natural phenomena and images can be seen in the abstract forms that result from this extremely expressive and creative process. Some work is barely manipulated, while other works are embellished to push meaning or content.

Information About The Art
Art Title: Drowning in HD
Art Description: Huntington’s disease is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that can have a horrific affect on those who are affected by it. Those with or at risk for Huntington's; along with their loved ones, often feel overwhelmed. They can feel like they're drowning; in the fear of the unknown, in their own symptoms, in burdening their loved ones, and in debt. Their loved ones and caregivers often feel the same. This painting is meant to represent those feelings of isolation, loneliness, and helplessness. The soft black represents death, while blue is representative of HD and the purple representative of juvenile HD. The drowning figure represents all of us in a battle against this terrible disease. Other symbols pertaining to HD are hidden throughout. The masked numbers represent those affected by HD; although those numbers are in constant flux as more families and family members are discovered to have HD or be at risk. Variance of those positive for HD is around 1 in 5,500 worldwide, but 1 in 1000 are affected by those who are at risk or positive for the disease. In the US, it is estimated that only 30,000 people have HD, while another 200,000 are at risk. However, many individuals or even entire families choose not to report or to ignore their at risk status, so the statistics are thought to likely be much higher. In the Lunsford family alone, over 100 individuals are affected by Roger Lunsford's positive status. That doesn't include Roger's seven siblings or their families, many of whom have never been tested for HD and may know little to nothing about it. Some family members likely died without knowing it was related to being positive for HD.You can learn more at The Huntington's Disease Society of America at https://hdsa.org
